REPUBLIC ACT No. 1955

AN ACT MAKING AN ANNUAL APPROPRIATION OF NOT TO EXCEED FIVE THOUSAND PESOS FROM THE INCOME DERIVED FROM THE OPERATION OF THE BUREAU OF PRISONS-PRISON INDUSTRIES AND SALVAGE WAREHOUSE REVOLVING FUND FOR PECUNIARY AID TO PRISONERS KILLED OR INJURED IN THE PERFORMANCE OF DUTY

Section 1. A sum of not to exceed five thousand pesos is hereby appropriated annually from the income derived from the operation of the Bureau of Prisons-Prison Industries and Salvage Warehouse Revolving Fund, for the payment of pecuniary aid to any national prisoner who may be injured or disabled while preventing a prison riot or jailbreak or while in the performance of duties required of him in any prison industry and not due to his negligence. Such aid shall be paid to the aforementioned prisoner at the time of his release from prison or any time during his confinement if he so desires: Provided, however, That if the prisoner dies as a result of the injury sustained by him, or from any other cause prior to his release, payment shall be made to his legal heirs, provided they are not the offended parties or who caused the imprisonment.

Section 2. The amount of pecuniary aid shall be determined by the Director of Prisons and approved by the Secretary of Justice, in accordance with the rules and regulations which shall be promulgated by the latter: Provided, however, That the maximum amount which may be paid as pecuniary aid shall in no case exceed five hundred pesos.

Section 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
