DECLARING SUNDAY, JUNE 1, 2003 AS NATIONAL TRANSPORT DAY

WHEREAS, historically the transport sector has been instrumental in bringing about development to our country;

WHEREAS, there was no proper recognition yet accorded to the sector, even with their unwavering service to the public at all times;

WHEREAS, the transport sector comprises a large number in our society with the following classification and services rendered:

• truck for hire- 200,000 units nationwide hauling 20 tons of commodities per day

• tricycles-1.7 million nationwide

• more than 200 transport cooperative nationwide

• at NCR there are more than 160 jeepney shuttles

o    intercity bus operators association-1479 units

o     25 bus companies with 7,000 employees

• FX Van Confederation - 45, 000 registered Luzon-wide with 90,000 dependents

• Provincial buses in active operation

WHEREAS, since our economy is highly dependent on the transport sector for progress, a Department of Transportation and Communications was created with different bureaus to oversee their operation and take care of their welfare.ℒαwρhi৷

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, President of the Philippines, by the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Sunday, June 1, 2003 as National Transport Day.
