AUTHORIZING ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION IN THE FIRST SOUTHEAST ASIAN CONFERENCE ON MATHEMATICS EDUCATION AT THE PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER FROM MAY 29 TO JUNE 3, 1978

The First South Asian Conference on Mathematics Education will be held from May 29 to June 3, 1978, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) and from June 4 to June 10, 1978, in Iligan City under the auspices of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines with the assistance of the Philippine Government, the International Convention on Mathematics Instruction (ICMI), the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society (SEAMS) and the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP).

The main objectives of the Conference are: (a) to provide a regional forum for the presentation of the results of studies made with regard to the type of mathematics programs currently offered at all levels; the type of mathematics programs that should be and could be offered so as to meet the goals of developing countries like the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries, and the training and upgrading of the mathematics staff in schools; (b) to explore ways of regional cooperation in mathematical education for research; and (c) to explore ways of making the problems of mathematical education known to the public and to our government so as to obtain the needed support.1aшphi1

The Department of Education and Culture is hereby authorized to send the following delegates to the Conference: One Division Mathematics Supervisor, two competent Elementary Mathematics teachers representing Grades I-III and Grades IV-VI, two High School Mathematics Teachers representing I-II years and III—IV years, and at least one mathematics faculty member from each college and university. All delegates from Luzon and Visayas and the division supervisors of Mindanao will attend the Manila Conference. The Elementary and secondary school delegates of Mindanao will attend the Iligan Conference.

Reasonable expenses for transportation, per diems and seminar fees may be allowed chargeable against the appropriations of their respective offices and schools, in accordance with the provisions of Presidential Decree No. 344 dated November 26, 1973, as implemented by COA General Circular No. 127 dated November 27, 1973, subject to the availability of funds and the usual accounting and auditing requirements as an exception to Memorandum Circular No. 593 of this Office dated August 8, 1972.

The participants shall submit to their respective heads of office and school a report on their attendance and participation in the Conference within fifteen (15) days after the termination thereof.
